Hello dear PREWA colleagues!

According to Kachru (1992), the
“Indianization” of English in India has led to a situation in which English has few if any British cultural features. Learning English in India, for example, really does not involve taking on a new culture since one is acquiring Indian English in India (Brown, 2007). This would be, precisely, the ideal scenario I
envision for Puerto Rico. With a language policy that clearly advances the Puerto Rican acculturation of English literature (use of contextualized Puerto Rican English literature at all levels), the learning of English in Puerto Rico would not involve the learning (or endorsement) of the American culture.
Instead, it would be acquiring/learning Puerto Rican English in Puerto Rico –a linguistic phenomenon that has been proven successfully in India. The gradual acceptance of the language will lead to a sense of ownership, thus reassuring its place as
a true second language for the Island. Englishes or English varieties (Kachru, 1992) symbolize the functional and formal variation in the language and its international acculturation.
The language then belongs to those who use it as their first language, and to those who use it as an additional language, whether in its standard form or in its localized forms. According to Kachru’s research in India, the process of language acculturation facilitates learning while eradicating cultural imposition.
The time has come for us to use our mighty pens and keyboards! It’s time to write our
own storyline! A new Puerto Rico is anxiously waiting and counting on us ...
